Rochester music legend Chuck Mangione dies at 84

Chuck Mangione, 84, died peacefully in his sleep Tuesday at his home in Rochester. The acclaimed flugelhorn and trumpet player was inducted into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame in 2012.


Over the course of his career, Mangione earned 14 Grammy nominations and won two. His 1977 album Feels So Good became one of the most successful jazz records ever produced, according to the Rochester Music Hall of Fame. In 1980, he gained international recognition when he performed his hit “Give It All You Got” during the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.

Mangione graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the Eastman School of Music. He later returned to Eastman to teach jazz and was awarded an honorary doctorate.

His musical career began with his brother, pianist Gap Mangione, as part of their group the Jazz Brothers. Gap Mangione was inducted into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame in 2015.
