Nissan recalls over 480,000 vehicles in the US and Canada due to engine failure risk

NEW YORK (AP) — Nissan has decided to recall in excess of 480,000 of its vehicles in the United States and Canada due to possible production mistakes that have the potential to lead to engine failure.

For this recall, the models included are the following: certain Nissan Rogues between 2021-2024 model years, and 2019-2020 Altimas that have been identified. In addition, the recall includes a number of 2019-2022 Infiniti QX50s and 2022 Infiniti QX55s sold under the carmaker / automaker’s luxury brand, as per the Nissan and NHTSA (the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the United States) sources of information of this week.

According to Nissan and documents published by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration this week, the cars affected are fitted with specific "VC-Turbo" engines that may contain bearing defects arising from the manufacturing process, as described in the NHTSA’s recall report. It may damage the engine and could finally result in engine failure while the vehicle is being used, the agency reports, thus increasing the risk of a car accident.

"Engine bearing failures are usually not abrupt events and rather evolve gradually over a period of time", mentions the NHTSA's recall report. This would indicate that affected drivers might receive several warnings about observing such changes, like strange sounds or malfunction-indicating lights.

It has been reported by the NHTSA documents that the recall encompasses 443,899 of cars in the U.S. The number of vehicles affected in Canada, according to a Nissan spokesman, is 37,837 which got confirmed to The Associated Press on Thursday.

According to the NHSTA’s recall report, the dealers of Nissan and Infiniti will examine the engine pan of these cars after the recall and fix or replace the engine if it is necessary. The recall specifically targets vehicles with the 1.5L 3-cylinder or 2.0L 4-cylinder VC-Turbo engine. The repairs that will be performed, and for free, too, will be determined by the engine type and the presence of debris in the course of the inspection.

Nissan, in an email, explained that the recall was a customer safety measure and it said it "continues to be committed to the safety of its customers". The company further mentioned the receipt of the letters at the end of August, to deliver the message to the affected people who will be instructed to go to a Nissan dealer or INFINITI retailer for an inspection and repair in case of need.
